Cues, Questions and Advanced Organizers
The purpose of questions, cues, and advanced organizers is to activate prior knowledge. This instructional strategy is used to bridge the known to the unknown in new learning. Cues and questions should guide learners to vital or key learnings instead of information that is interesting or unusual. Technology can be used to facilitate this strategy by linking questions, cues, and advanced organizers. For example, Inspiration can be used before starting a science kit or lab, social studies unit, or a new chapter or concept. The teacher can ask the students what they already know about the topic, and use the rapid-fire function in Inspiration to brainstorm ideas or thoughts. This advance organizer can be referred to throughout the unit and revised, added to, and edited as needed. Since advance organizers are best used when the information is not organized well, Inspiration is an ideal tool because of its flexibility in reorganizing. Students can start with random ideas and then connect them as their knowledge increases.
Another way to use the tools of technology in questioning is to use a scrolling PowerPoint slide show with questions. Having questions scroll during class that will be asked tomorrow can help establish a “mental set” for student to process. When these questions are higher-level thinking questions and allow students plenty of wait time to process, it will increase the students’ depth of learning.
Questions could also be posed in a PowerPoint, students could type responses to questions in the notes.
Partial outlines or fill in the blank guides could be used for note taking.
